1995 Emcee - Steve Largent
Steve Largent has accomplished more in his lifetime than just being a record-setting pass receiver, which would have been enough for most. Steve Largent wanted to do more, to be more, for his family and community.
Steve attended the University of Tulsa, where he made contributions on and off the football field. On the field, Largent led the nation in touchdown receptions in 1974 and 1975. Off the field, he managed to maintain an excellent academic record and was honored by the Tulsa University Alumni Association as one of the top eight graduating seniors. In 1976, Steve graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology.
After graduating from college his performance certainly did not diminish while playing for the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League. During his fourteen-year career, Steve Largent set six different career records and participated in seven Pro Bowls. In 1988, Largent was named as the NFL Man of the Year for his contributions to his community and family. Largent retired from professional football in 1989 and was selected for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on January 28, 1995.
After football, Largent established an advertising and marketing consulting firm. In 1994, he became active in politics and became a member of the House of Representatives on November 29, 1994 to finish the remaining term of James Inhofe. Largent has held his seat in Congress ever since. Representative Largent has serves on such committees as the Budget Committee, Health Care Task Force, the Science Committee, the Energy & Management and Space & Aeronautics subcommittees. In 2001, Largent may give up his seat in Congress, to run for Governor of the State of Oklahoma.
Although Largent is now a member of Congress, he is still involved with his home town of Tulsa. Steve has served on the Board of Trustees for The University of Tulsa and still serves on the Advisory Board of the Tulsa Area Salvation Army. He also remains active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Focus on the Family, which is a Christian ministry led by Dr. James Dobson, as well as attending the Fellowship Bible Church.
